Gond Katira

Native of Natural offers Premium Edible Gond Katira, which is scientifically known as Tragacanth Gum (Gummi Tragacanthae). This is a natural gum obtained from the dried sap (exudate) of several species of the Middle Eastern legume plant, Astragalus.

Gond Katira is unique among edible gums because when soaked in water, it swells significantly (up to 50 times its volume) into a translucent, odorless, and tasteless jelly-like consistency (mucilage). It is highly prized in traditional Indian and Middle Eastern cultures for its potent cooling properties and its use as a natural thickening agent.

Key Health

  • Natural Body Coolant: The most popular use; consumed in summer drinks to reduce internal body heat, prevent heatstroke, and soothe issues like nosebleeds associated with excessive heat (often associated with balancing Pitta Dosha in Ayurveda).
  • Gut Health & Constipation: High in soluble fiber, it acts as a gentle bulk-forming laxative, aids digestion, and helps regulate bowel movements.
  • Hydration: Due to its ability to absorb and hold water, it helps retain moisture in the body, preventing dehydration.
  • Postpartum & Strength: Traditionally given to new mothers (often in laddoos or milk) to help regain strength, support bone health (rich in calcium and magnesium), and sometimes to aid lactation.
  • Skin & Hair: Used externally (in masks) and internally for its hydrating properties to improve skin elasticity, reduce wrinkles, and nourish the scalp.

Applications

  • Beverages & Desserts: Used in India and the Middle East to provide a unique, gelatinous, and chewy texture to cold drinks like Falooda, rose milk, sherbets, and lemonade.
  • Food Industry: Used globally as a stabilizer, thickener, and emulsifier (E413) in salad dressings, ice cream, processed foods, and sauces due to its excellent stability in acidic conditions.
  • Pharmaceuticals: Used as a binder in tablets, a suspending agent in liquid medications, and a demulcent (soothing agent) in cough syrups.
  • Crafts & Cosmetics: Used as a binder in artist’s pastels, an adhesive in bookbinding, and as an ingredient in certain face masks and creams.
